As we accurately did when Oyo State employed new teachers, we will be breaking down the expected earnings of a new Lagos State teacher. We will cover the gross salary ( before any deductions) and the actual net salary.

Why Should You Know How Much New Lagos Teachers Earn?

It is important that you know how much your expected revenue is in order to plan your life around it. You shouldn’t have a ₦300,000 plan for a ₦80,000 pay.

More importantly is that it helps you decide quite early, if this Lagos TESCOM job is for you or otherwise. We have had many issues of people leaving a better paying job chiefly for the security government jobs offer, but unfortunately couldn’t stand the meagre pay in the end.

How Much is a New Teacher Paid in Lagos TESCOM?

From our findings, a new secondary school teacher in Lagos TESCOM is employed on an entry level GL8 Step 2. This is the minimum step for any University graduate employed in the Civil Service.

On the new ₦85,000/month minimum wage scale of Lagos State, he or she is expected to earn ₦153,224.69 per month.

The break down is as follows:

• Monthly Basic Salary 71,373.13
• Rent Subsidy 35,686.57
• Transport Allowance 17,843.28
• Meal Subsidy 6,909.78
• Utility Allowance 10,705.97
• Furniture Allowance 10,705.97
• Teaching Allowance 19,627.61

TOTAL ₦172,852.31

Note that the TSS (Teachers Salary Scale) herein referred to as “Teaching Allowance” is what sets the salary of teachers apart from other civil servants. Without the TSS, a Grade Level 8 Step 2 worker in Lagos would earn ₦153,224.69.

How Much Does a Lagos TESCOM New Appointee Actually Get Paid?

The net pay after all the deductions is:
• 9% Personal Income Tax on gross income, which amounts to ₦15,556.68
• 8% contributory pension from basic emoluments, covering Basic Salary, Rent Subsidy, and Transportation Allowance, which all add up to ₦129,899.10.
• 8% of ₦129,899.10 is ₦9,992.24.
• Employee Health Insurance is ₦833.34
• National Housing Fund is around 1% of gross income. That amounts to ₦1780.38.

Total deductions will be ₦30,236.87.

Deducting this from the gross income, we should have a net income of ₦142,611.44.

So to account for errors in estimation, we should be looking at at least ₦140,000 for every new teacher in Lagos TESCOM on Grade Level 8 Step 2.

How Does This Compare With Other States?

Save for the Federal Government, there is no state in Nigeria that pays teachers as much as Lagos does. With regular promotions and other perks, it is like the utmost public teaching job in Nigeria outside the FG employment.

While we await further directives from the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (Lagos TESCOM), applicants are advised to work hard and try their hands at questions in their field. They should also join social media groups and stay abreast of developments.
