Hijrah Holiday 2025: Oyo State Declares Friday Public Holiday

The Oyo State Government has officially declared Friday, June 27, 2025, as a work-free day to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1447AH. The announcement of the Hijrah holiday 2025 was made through a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, signed by Prof. Olanike K. Adeyemo, and directed to key government functionaries and stakeholders across the state.

This Hijrah holiday 2025 was approved by Governor Seyi Makinde to enable Muslims and residents of the state to commemorate the migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah — an event that marks the start of the Islamic calendar.

This is a new twist in the Oyo State school calendar for the 2025/2026 academic session.

Hijrah Holiday: A Day for Reflection and Unity

In the circular, Governor Makinde enjoined “all and sundry” to use the Hijrah 2025 occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria at large. The state government emphasizes that the holiday is not just a time off work, but an opportunity for spiritual reflection, community bonding, and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence.

What to Expect on Hijrah Day in Oyo State

With the work-free day officially confirmed for Friday, June 27, 2025, work is expected to end on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Work resumes on Monday, June 30, 2025. Workers are expected to stay home and spend quality time with their loved ones. It is expected they will reflect on the significance and importance of the Hijrah, while imbibing its lessons of perseverance and dedication.

Hijrah Holiday 2025 – Significance Beyond Oyo State

While Oyo State leads in recognizing Hijrah 1447 with a public holiday, many Muslims across Nigeria and around the world will also be observing the new Islamic year. The move aligns with efforts to give Islamic holidays due recognition and to foster inclusiveness in governance and public life.

Conclusion

With the declaration of Hijrah holiday 2025, Oyo State once again shows its commitment to religious harmony and the cultural identity of its people.

This also follows in the path of the multiple holidays that have plagued the 3rd term of the 2025/2026 academic session in Oyo State. As the Islamic year 1447AH begins, citizens are encouraged to be intentionally purposeful, dedicated and foster unity.
