How do you beat the Lagos-Ibadan traffic issues during Sallah? Ileya is the Ibadan festival and you can be sure of the Ileya traffic gridlock. So you’re heading to Iwo Road, travelling home from Lagos or Abeokuta for Ileya, and boom — traffic everywhere.
Once the Ibadan city section of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway gets blocked, Ibadan traffic spreads like harmattan fire. Most feeder roads are already jam-packed, and confusion sets in.
At this point, it’s not just about finding an alternative route — it’s about knowing where to turn, when to turn, and when not to try anything funny.
This is the real local man’s guide for navigating Ibadan when the expressway decides to embarrass you.
🧠 Golden Rule: Timing is everything
- 🚦 Any serious traffic before Soka → Turn back and reroute via Challenge or Iyana Felele. Iyana Felele is shorter, but those narrow streets can choke easily. So it is important to proceed with caution.
- 🛣️ Anywhere after Soka → Don’t turn back! Ibadan roads will still give you a path forward or sideways. You go reach.
Scenario 1: 🚫 Toll Gate is Blocked
You’re trying to enter Ibadan but the Lagos-Ibadan toll gate is blocked. What are your options?
🔀 If You Can Reach the Bridge before Guru:
- ✅ Climb the bridge, and proceed to New Garage.
- From New Garage:
- If Methodist is clear (rare if Toll Gate is blocked, but it happens), rejoin the Lagos–Ibadan expressway and continue to Iwo Road.
- If Methodist is jammed, go the inner Ibadan way:
- Challenge → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
- Challenge → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
- If Methodist is clear (rare if Toll Gate is blocked, but it happens), rejoin the Lagos–Ibadan expressway and continue to Iwo Road.
This is solid, tested, and reliable.
🔀 If You’ve Passed the Bridge but Still Close to Guru:
- Take the road beside the sawmill opposite Guru Maraji.
- This links you to Odo Ona → New Garage.
- Then choose:
- Challenge Route, or
- Try Methodist if you’re feeling lucky.

🚫 Soka Blocked?
✅ Soka Underbridge → Iyana Felele → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
✅ Soka Underbridge → Challenge → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
You’ll need to navigate to the Soka underbridge to cross over to the Lagos-bound lane. Just after that, Iyana Felele is the first turning on your right. From there, you can connect to Challenge or Molete.
But tread carefully — if traffic is already heavy, those inner roads can become a nightmare. They’re narrow, winding, and not built for major traffic flow. What looks like a shortcut may quickly turn into a slow crawl.
There’s a dirt road from Soka to Molete — it’s shorter, yes, but don’t let that fool you. It’s rough, winding, and not exactly in great shape.
And please, don’t follow Micra drivers blindly — they have spiritual suspension and immunity from potholes. What carries their korope may not carry your Corolla.
🚫 Sanyo Blocked?
Pick your route:
- ✅ Challenge → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
- ✅ Soka Underbridge → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
- ✅ Soka Underbridge → Iyana Felele → Molete → Beere → Gate → Iwo Road
If you haven’t reached Soka yet, just endure whatever traffic is in front of you and get to Soka.
Once there, use the underbridge to cross to the Lagos-bound lane, then watch out — Iyana Felele is the first turning on your right. That’s your escape route.
From there, you can link up with Challenge or Molete and continue your journey toward Iwo Road without tears.
But if you’ve already passed Soka and there’s no turning back, your best bet is to stay on the express and follow the traffic flow. The inner street roads on that side of the highway are underdeveloped, tricky to navigate, and can easily confuse someone who’s not familiar with the area.
🚫 Boluwaji Blocked?
You’re deep already. Here’s what you can do:
- ✅ Academy Overhead Bridge → Labo → Orita Aperin → Olorunsogo → Iwo Road
- ✅ Academy Overhead Bridge → Labo → Bere → Agodi Gate → Iwo Road
- ✅ Or fallback to the Molete axis via Challenge or Iyana Felele
At this point, turning back won’t do much for you — unless the Lagos-bound lane is completely free (which is rare).
Your smarter move? Head for Sanyo or Iyana Felele and explore the inner roads that link to Molete.
If that doesn’t work out, just keep pushing forward until you get to Academy Bridge. If it’s accessible, climb it, drive down to Labo, then turn to Orita Aperin, connect to Olorunsogo, and you’ll eventually find your way to Iwo Road.
But if the traffic extends beyond Olorunsogo, don’t stress. Just drive straight to Bere, connect through Agodi Gate, and land safely at Iwo Road.
🚫 Academy Blocked?
This is an insider route:
- ✅ Academy Overhead Bridge → Labo → Orita Aperin → Olorunsogo → Iwo Road
Steady and consistent.
🚫 Muslim Blocked?
You’ve got three lanes to freedom:
- ✅ Academy or Muslim Overhead Bridge → Labo → Aperin → Olorunsogo → Iwo Road
- ✅ Muslim → Aperin → Gate (via Aremo – Oje or Oluyoro → Gate)
🚫 Olorunsogo Blocked?
Use one of these tried paths:
- ✅ Labo → Orita Aperin → Olorunsogo → Iwo Road
- ✅ Aperin → Gate (via Aremo/Oje/Oluyoro → Iwo Road)

🚫 Oremeji Blocked?
Now you need local street wisdom:
- ✅ Gate → Alakia → Airport Road → Egbeda/Oluwo → Iwo Road
- ✅ Oremeji bridge → Agugu → Lagelu Grammar Gate
- From there: ask for help getting to “Olowo To N Fowo Shanu” (yes, that’s a real place!).
- From there: ask for help getting to “Olowo To N Fowo Shanu” (yes, that’s a real place!).
🚫 Sawmill Blocked?
Destination matters:
➡️ Going to Ife/Osogbo/Ondo?
- ✅ Sawmill → Old Ife Road → Airport Road → Ife-Ibadan Expressway
➡️ Going to Iwo?
- ✅ Sawmill → Old Ife Road → Alakia → Ogungbade → Olodo → Iwo Road
